    Welcome to Walk Through the Ancient World™! This dynamic 6th grade presentation has students grow in performance literacy, listening skills, and vocabulary development, all while actively participating in a rich retelling of ancient history, learning about the civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome.     Walk Through the Ancient World explores some of the famous events, historical figures, and vocabulary studied in sixth grade curriculum based on California state standards for History and English. Creative expression, notetaking, and vocabulary development are fostered and encouraged as students discover Ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through an imaginary tour of the ancient civilizations. Students portray historical people of the past, such as Rameses II, Socrates, and Julius Caesar and broaden their understanding with maps, timelines, and games. This presentation brings ancient times alive for students and provides an excellent overview that can be used as an essential point of reference throughout the school year!

The presentation is a supplement to what is being taught in the classroom providing an overview of many key events that support classroom learning and student retention. It is designed to spark student interest in the subject matter therefore allowing for better in-depth classroom discussions on perspectives of history as detailed in the California State Framework.

    Content Details:

    The presentation opens with an introduction to the first civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Minoans and continues with detailed discovery of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Throughout the presentation students are awarded points by the presenter in a friendly competition to try and become the first-place team! Students are encouraged to display teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, and enthusiasm. The presenter calls out pre-assigned vocabulary words (Expert Cards) and names of myths, legends, and historical people (Character Cards) of ancient times, for students to come up and recite. Students receive points for their team for recitations of their Expert Word and Character cards and some may receive additional points for being caught with “greatness” by pulling a gold-tipped lollipop out of an ancient pyramid sucker holder! Students are also given the opportunity to present a pre-rehearsed 5-minute script based on the daily life of their team’s civilization.

    To prepare, teachers are provided with a digital Preparation Guide containing detailed instructions and all materials to print. Materials include an assignment list for placing students on their 3 teams (civilizations of Egypt, Greece, and Rome) and to a specific Expert or Character card designated for their team/civilization (18 Expert Word cards, 30 Character cards); an Ancient World “game sheet” (has fill in and multiple choice questions for students to complete at designated points of the presentation); Instructions on preparing the teams’ Daily Life skit; a Name Tag template for making student name-tags; a parent/caregiver invitation letter, a score sheet for keeping track of points awarded by the presenter and a “do not disturb” sign for the door.
